4 Ways to Support Local Businesses

Across C&N’s footprint, thousands of small businesses serve delicious meals, curate unforgettable experiences & provide quality service every day. These businesses serve our communities & empower local economies, day in & day out. For Small Business Month, C&N is celebrating our small, local businesses by sharing four simple but meaningful ways you can support the local businesses that make our communities special.

Connect

Purchases aren’t the only way to support a business. Engaging with local businesses online & in-person can help them stand out & build loyal customer relationships.

Social Media

Many small businesses use social media to connect with regular & potential customers. Following your favorite businesses on Facebook® or Instagram® is an easy way to show your support. Every like, comment & share helps expand their reach. Plus, it’s great way to keep updated on hours, specials, upcoming events & more.

Emails

Signing up for emails is another simple way to stay connected with local businesses. Newsletters & promotional emails often include the latest offerings, events, discounts, sales & much more. Some businesses even offer exclusive savings to email subscribers.  While no one loves a crowded inbox, reading a local business’ email is worthwhile. Just a few minutes of reading can keep you in the know & save you money.

Recommend

When a friend needs a new hair stylist or a visitor asks where to eat, a strong recommendation goes a long way. Here are two easy ways to spread the word about your favorite local businesses:

Leave a Review

Reviews are important for a small business’s growth & reputation. According to the Better Business Bureau, 82% of consumers search for online reviews before making a purchase. The next time you have a great experience, consider leaving an honest review on platforms like Google® or Yelp®. Positive feedback can boost a business’s visibility & encourage others to stop in.

Word of Mouth

Personal recommendations are a powerful way to support small businesses. In close-knit communities, praise from a friend or family member can carry more weight than an online review. Some businesses also offer referral programs that reward customers for bringing in new business. So, when the opportunity arises, make sure to tell others about your favorite local spots.

Give

Everyone has a budget & you don’t need to break the bank to support local businesses. Here are two meaningful ways to give back without stretching your wallet:

Pay with Cash

Cards are flexible & convenient, but local merchants often pay processing fees of 1% to 3% on all card purchases. For small businesses handling many daily transactions, those fees can add up quickly. When possible, consider paying with cash so more of each sale stays with the businesses & in your community.

Gifts

Buying gifts from local stores strengthens the local economy as you shop for loved ones. The next time you need the perfect gift, check local boutiques, markets & antique shops before resorting to major online retailers. Many local businesses also offer gift cards, which make quick & easy gifts while introducing your loved ones to your favorite places.

Engage

Building a vibrant community starts with showing up. Here are a few ways to support your neighbors and the businesses that help your community thrive:

Events

Looking to meet new people & discover new businesses? Attend community events. Farmers markets, local theater productions, trivia nights & festivals are all great ways to get involved. These fun outings can introduce you to local entrepreneurs, community partners & hidden gems in your area. If you enjoy the event, invite some friends to tag along next time or consider future volunteering opportunities. The possibilities are endless.

Spread the Love

A rising tide lifts all boats & a strong local economy benefits everyone. Your community is bigger than any one business. The next time you plan a night out, think about how you can support multiple businesses in one trip. Have dinner at the local burger joint then grab dessert at the ice cream parlor next door. Catch a matinee at the independent cinema, then cross the street for pizza afterward. Spreading the love, trying new things & supporting multiple businesses can positively impact your community, because we’re all in this together.

Small businesses are the heartbeat of our local economy & community. Each time you leave a review, attend an event, shop locally or share a recommendation, you make a meaningful contribution. This Small Business Month, consider how you can support the local businesses that make our neighborhoods special, vibrant places to live.
